What is BigCommerce?

BigCommerce is a privately held cloud-based shopping cart software provider that enables online entrepreneurs to quickly and easily set up a fully functional online store to sell physical or digital products online. Founded in 2009, with over 65,000 clients in 150 countries and $9 billion in processed transactions, BigCommerce is one of the largest eCommerce platforms on the market.

BigCommerce Pros and Cons

  • A comprehensive set of features. One of the biggest advantages that sets BigCommerce apart from other eCommerce solutions is a rich selection of “out of the box” tools provided as part of their monthly package. These range from the most basic features, such as the ability to add product variations (different colors and sizes) and social sharing, to more advanced tools like product wishlists, return handling, store statistics reporting, and more.
  • A large app store. BigCommerce and Shopify are the two online store builders that offer more than 100 different third-party apps and add-ons. The search functionality that allows users to search, filter and browse through different categories adds another layer of convenience and helps store owners fetch the app they need without any hassle.
  • A solid collection of premium templates. Everyone agrees that good website design can dramatically influence any online store’s performance. And although Shopify is best known for having the most comprehensive library of free and paid templates, BigCommerce has recently come out with a new collection of responsive, modern premium templates that will satisfy even the pickiest users. Built to establish a clean and fluid user experience, BigCommerce templates is one of the reasons why e-retailers choose to work with this provider.

  • Hostile pricing structure. BigCommerce users have complained about the recent changes in the platform’s pricing structure, which takes advantage of companies that reach a certain sales volume and revenue point. Even the lower-tier businesses that are selling products at a cheaper price but in high volumes have been hit by a sudden price hike, forcing them to switch from the Basic plan to the more expensive options as well as pay extra for any sales that go over the set threshold.

    BigCommerce plans include:
Standard, $29.95/mo, up to $50k in sales per year
Plus, $79.95/mo, up to $125k in sales per year
Pro, $199.95/mo, up to $1m in sales per year
Enterprise, custom pricing, unlimited sales per year

If you think you might end up with an expensive plan, look up other eCommerce solutions and you will certainly find something that will meet your needs.
  • Poor customer support. Many online businesses have suffered customer backlash as a result of unsatisfactory customer support. BigCommerce have also been slammed by its users for a slow and unhelpful support team, however, it’s difficult to say how deeply-rooted this problem is. The company has rolled out 24/7 ‘live agent support’, but before you’re given a phone number or email address, you need to fill in an online form and refer to the knowledge base. This is not the most helpful approach and can cause further irritation if you’re already struggling with a particular issue.

BigCommerce is one of the major players in the market, but there is a number of other eCommerce platforms that come with their own perks and are worth considering. The most notable BigCommerce competitors include:
