As the leading social media marketing platform, there’s no question that Facebook holds massive potential to help businesses grow. But before you jump on it, one basic Facebook statistic you should learn more about is its number of users.

According to the last available official report from parent company Meta, in Q4 2023, the number of Facebook users worldwide was 3.07 billion. This marked a marginal 0.52% increase from the previous quarter and a 3.44% year-over-year rise. 

The number of Facebook users has been increasing over the past decade or so. In fact, its global user base in 2012 was at 1.06 billion, the first year its number of users surpassed 1 billion. By 2017, it had breached the two-billion mark, doubling its 2012 figures, to hit 2.13 billion.

As the data shows, this impressive growth of Facebook users has continued since then. In just 11 years, Facebook was able to grow its number of users by nearly three times.

From 2024, Meta stopped including daily active users and monthly active users for Facebook in its financial reports.

Growth of Facebook users 

Focusing on the annual growth of Facebook users from 2013 to 2023, the year in which the number of users grew the fastest came in 2016. That year, Facebook increased its user base by 16.91%. In contrast, the smallest increase was in 2022, when the number of Facebook users grew by just 1.75%—around one-tenth of its growth rate in 2016.

The annual growth of Facebook users has seen a deceleration in recent years. From 2012 to 2017, it grew at an average of 16.71% annually. From 2018 to 2023, however, the average annual increase slowed significantly, to 6.32%.

Nevertheless, the overall growth of Facebook users remains impressive. From 2012 to 2023, the number of Facebook users rose by a total of 2.01 billion, marking an increase of 190.24% and an average annual growth rate of 10.29%.

A separate analysis by industry experts indicates the number of Facebook users is lower than Meta’s official count. According to the report, there were 2.72 billion users worldwide in 2023, before a 3.96% increase this year took the figure to 2.83 billion. 

The report also anticipates further annual increases in the coming years. In 2025, the number of Facebook users is forecast to rise by 3.55%, to 2.93 billion, before a 3.22% the following year to push the figure past the three billion milestone. The report anticipates there will be 3.11 billion Facebook users worldwide by 2027, following a 2.92% annual increase.

Meta’s last available report shows that the biggest portion of its users are located in Asia Pacific. With 1.37 billion monthly active users there, they make up 44.6% of all Facebook users.

This is followed by Europe, with 408 million Facebook users, and the United States and Canada, with 272 million. The remaining 1 billion Facebook users are scattered across the rest of the world.
