By: Andrew Roach May 08, 2017 Topic: How to Find a Product

Finding products to sell in your online store can be a difficult process, especially if you’re new to ecommerce. It’s critical that you fill your store’s inventory with high-quality products which you can sell at an affordable price point for your customers. One of the easiest ways you can achieve this is by running your business with the dropshipping method. When you’ve added great products to your dropshipping store, there’s no limit to the amount of profit which you can generate.

We’ve created this article to help you find the perfect dropshipping products for your store. At the end of this article you’ll be armed with all the necessary information you need to start sourcing great dropshipping products and get started with your store today.

What is Dropshipping?

Dropshipping products

Dropshipping is an ecommerce business model which enables entrepreneurs to find and sell products without ever having to carry any inventory. When you run your business with dropshipping you’ll only ever order products from your suppliers when a customer places an order. You’ll simply get in contact with the supplier, who will then ship the product directly from their warehouse to your customer’s door–it’s a hassle-free way to manage your store’s inventory.

This method of running a business requires much less investment than the typical ecommerce businesses, which involves sourcing products in bulk, and then spending valuable resources storing them until a customer places an order.

Dropshipping is opening up ecommerce and online entrepreneurialism to the world. It’s a simple way to get started on your entrepreneurial journey, and it allows you to start your own business with little financial risk.

Why Should You Dropship?

For many entrepreneurs who are thinking about starting their own ecommerce business, the thought of needing to spend valuable resources and time to manage their store’s inventory is off putting. If you run your business using the dropshipping method you’ll never have to worry about managing your store’s inventory–you can focus on making sales and generating traffic to your store.

It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting your journey as an entrepreneur, or if you’re an ecommerce veteran, dropshipping is a simple and effective method for running your business. The amount of time that you spend running your store will be totally up to you. You don’t even need to quit your job to start your own store, you can balance it around your life.

Finding the Perfect Dropshipping Products

Dropshipping businesses offer ecommerce entrepreneurs a lot of freedom, but there are some key points which you’ll need to take into consideration when you’re sourcing products for your store’s inventory. Once you understand the types of products which are perfect for a dropshipping store you’ll be ahead of your competition, and you’ll be ready to start making sales.

We believe in making life easier for entrepreneurs, so we’ve broken down the main things which you’ll need to consider when you’re searching for products to add to your dropshipping store.

Trending Products Are Perfect For a Dropshipping Business

Products which are currently trending are great options for your dropshipping business’ inventory. If you manage to source trending products for your store before they hit the commercial masses, you’ll be able to take advantage of low marketing fees, and establish your store as a leader in that field.

If you’re interested in finding products which are currently trending, or products which are likely to be popular in the future, you can check out the following resources:

Take a look through these resources and make a note if you find any trending products which would be suitable for your store’s inventory. If you do decide on a trending product for your dropshipping store’s inventory, take some time to think about how you’re going to market these products to your audience.

Finding a Niche

Dropshipping products

Targeting a specific niche with your dropshipping store can be a great way to help your dropshipping store grow and generate revenue. Take a look on Google Trends and do some research into the niches which have high potential–these could be good niches for your dropshipping products.

You’ll have less competition if you’re running a niche dropshipping store, as you’ll be targeting a smaller audience. This means that your marketing efforts will be much cheaper, especially if you’re thinking of using Facebook advertising, or Google Adwords. It’ll also be easier to rank your store on search engines when you run a niche dropshipping store, which is good for your business’ long-term growth.

It’s critical to note that starting off your dropshipping store in a specific niche doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to expand into different areas later on. When you’ve cemented your store as a leader in that niche you can try adding related products which you believe your current customers will be interested in, which will allow you to branch out and target new customers.

Reasonable Markup Opportunities

Dropshipping products

The cornerstone of any successful ecommerce business is the ability to generate profit, and your products should be sourced with this in mind. Try to find products which you can sell for at least $10 more than the price which you sourced them for. For example, if you’re sourcing a baseball hat for $5, then try to sell it in your store for $15. In this case, your sale will cover the price which it cost you to source the product, the cost of your marketing efforts, and will still leave you with a nice profit margin at the end of the transaction.

Selecting a Supplier For Your Dropshipping Products

A successful dropshipping business will have strong relationships with suppliers who can provide them with high-quality products at an affordable price point.

There are a wide variety of great suppliers available to ecommerce entrepreneurs, and platforms like Oberlo Supply make it even easier to find great products. When you’re searching for products on Oberlo Supply, you can rest assured that you’re dealing with reliable suppliers — we’ve hand picked them to ensure the best quality service for our merchants.

Suppliers which have a high feedback score and have been operating for a lengthy amount of time are legitimate suppliers who provide entrepreneurs with a good service. When you’re sourcing products for your store stick to these suppliers–reliable suppliers are ideal for a dropshipping business.

Dealing with Delivery Times

When you’re running your store with a dropshipping model you’ll need to be prepared to deal with longer delivery times. Your products may be shipped from suppliers in China, which means that the delivery times can be slightly longer than usual. You can remedy this issue by sourcing products which have the ePacket delivery option

Dropshipping products

This delivery method allows for faster delivery of lightweight products from Chinese suppliers. Products which weigh up to 2kg (4.4lbs) are eligible for ePacket delivery–this is something which you’ll need to consider when you’re sourcing products for your dropshipping store’s inventory. ePacket delivery is essential when you’re looking to provide a high-quality service to your customers.

There are a wide variety of countries which can benefit from ePacket delivery, including: United States, Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Brazil, France, and Germany– you can check out the full list of countries which can take advantage of ePacket delivery here.

20 days delivery on E-packet ???? I did not see one product on ALiExpress with that shipping time 0_o

is it only for the US then ?

and can someone tell me .. Majority of the products have there sales timings.. would the prices really change after the sale time is over?

  • KegsW

ePacket is not just for the US, as mentioned in the article there a quite a few countries it applies to. If you couldn’t see it on a product you may need to try a different product (not all suppliers offer it) or, most likely, just change the selection from normal shipping to ePacket before adding the item to your cart.
Also, I bought something with ePacket shipping a couple of weeks ago. Stated delivery time was 13-20 days and I received it to regional Australia in 5 business days. I was very impressed as there is no way Australia Post could manage to do it that quickly.

Thanks for this information, I’m sure it will be great begining…

  • I love using drop ship -my big concern is always the shipping cost and time it takes. Ordering sample products to test the vendor you are using is crucial – I have had to eliminate a few because of lengthy delays in getting the products delivered.

What would be really great is a resource for finding manufacturers or distributors that drop ship in the US/Canada/UK/Australia etc. There are directories available but the cost is over the top. Surely there must be a place to find these.

What is most efficient way to get approved by potential suppliers?

  • Free Syria

Mate, Australian post must have done its part for you to receive it in that time frame. Shipping out of China is what slows down everything. Trust me, I know that much.

Hi Everybody, I have just launched a women’s Fashion store stocked from Ali Express and ordered 2 tops as a test for quality and delivery and it is a nightmare. One top took 20 days the other I am still waiting for after 6 weeks. Quality was not that good, not only that but Chinese sizes do not fit western women and you have to adjust size and the customer has to accurately measure before ordering. My daughter tried one of the tops and it would not go over the shoulder although ordered to UK size and the design was poor. You cannot run an online store like this therefore I am looking for European clothing manufacturers but found none to date that would drop-ship. My experience says do not use Ali Express for women’s clothing unless anyone can give me a solution.

  • Bill

I read an article in one of the Sunday papers about why Amazon, Ebay and other large online stores are not worried by Ali Express(Ali Baba) prices and will remain profitable as the delivery time from China at minimum 20-40 days is not acceptable by most people in the West, of course these large stores have inventory and stock.

  • one50

I was planning to create a storefront and dropship bicycle parts and apparell, until I realized almost all of the apparell was counterfit and did not match the description. Apparently this is a problem with any athletic jersey sold on Ali. Obviously operating a business where the product is sight unseen (i cannot possibly buy a sample of every item I planned on offering to check the quality- and this is a huge problem. If the supplier is offering an item and stating it is manufactured under/for a brand and you are trying to sell those items to customers, and they are not authentic, that’s a HUGE problem.

Any ideals for fast selling products anyone????????

If you’re sourcing products from AliExpress, we advise against branded/licensed/trademark goods — this will help you to avoid legal issues. We’ve wrote an article about this here: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/avoid-counterfeit-goods-aliexpress/

Also, bear in mind that you don’t NEED to sell something that you’re passionate about, it is a business after all. Investigate which products you think will sell well and contemplate selling those too. Check out our article about the top products to dropship in fall: https://www.oberlo.com/blog/best-dropshipping-products-sell-fall

  • MR. A

  • Andreea Ftk

Hi Andrew, how can you run a store if you have to wait for your product 20 days? Who would buy it? So, in that case, maybe I misunderstood drop shipping, but it seems to me that is inevitable to have stocks of merchandise if you want to run a store. Could you please bring some light in this?

Thanks for the valuable info . I am new in this. no prior knowledge . I just want to know how much exactly will cost me to start ? The minimum price please .

  • Håvard Krislok

I think an article like this, describing how to find the perfect product for dropshipping, would not be complete without some warning words on the dangers of importing non-certified products from China to countries where different rules apply. Just one example, if you sell a toy to EU and it does not comply with EN 71, and a child gets hurt by it, you may be facing a serious lawsuit as the seller. Readers please remember, you will not read about serious issues like this on this site. At least I have not found it.

  • Lisa Schofield

    Good Point Thank YOU!

  • Lisa Schofield

I am just getting started. Should we have a different store for different types of products?

  • Andrew Roach

    Hey Mohammed,

It’s totally free to get started with Oberlo. You’ll need money for your Shopify subscription, and then any money that you’ll be using for paid marketing campaigns.

It’s a bit difficult to give you an exact number for the money that you’ll need to get started, but I’d say at least $50-$100 (still much cheaper than a traditional ecommerce store).
