According to a recent survey, as of Q2 2023, Costco leads the chart of the top 10 department stores in the USA. The study ranks the stores by their popularity, determined by the percentage of consumers that view them favorably.
Results from the study shows that 68% of US consumers say they like Costco. The data also shows that Costco is slightly more popular among female consumers—69% of women say they like Costco, compared to 67% of men. Incidentally, Costco also ranks among the country’s largest retailers, generating revenues of over $160 billion in 2022.

Second on the list of the top department stores in the USA is Dollar Tree, a discount retailer. Its popularity is one percentage point lower than Costco’s, at 67%. Sam’s Club, T.J. Maxx, and Target are in joint third place—65% of shoppers say they enjoy their shopping experiences at these three department stores.
Walmart follows in sixth place, with 64%. It is also among the top retail and ecommerce companies worldwide. The seventh most popular department store in the USA is Big Lots—61% of consumers have a positive opinion of it. Macy’s, a high-end department store, and Kohl’s, a Wisconsin-headquartered department store retail chain, are tied for eighth on the list of the top department stores in the USA. They are liked by 60% of shoppers. Both are also vastly more popular among females.
Marshalls rounds out the top 10 department stores in the USA. The Massachusetts-headquartered company has a popularity rating of 59%. It’s worth noting that Marshalls is more popular among millennials. 63% of millennial shoppers say they like Marshalls, compared to 58% of Gen X consumers and 57% of baby boomers.
